What is better when travelling – a suitcase or backpack?
Can you answer Catherine D's question about backpacks?:
My husband and I are doing an around the world trip in December, six weeks, eight destinations. We've never done any type of long distance travel before and are wondering what is going to be better – a suitcase or backpack? We're not actually backpacking, have got everything planned out – accommodation, flights, etc.
He wants to go with a suitcase, I'm thinking a backpack.
Any suggestions / recommendations??
Thanks!

if you're not actually backpacking, maybe a suitcase would be better. your clothes might get more wrinkly in a backpack.
backpack if you can fit everyting in ther ecuz then you can also take it onto the plane…
i always bring a backpack, traveling light is the best way to go it gives you a lot more independence wherever youre going
suitcase will hold better
A packpack for sure. You can take it more places and it is easier to carry around.
If your traveling all over the world pack light and keep some room for extra stuff that you buy on the way! =)
packs will go anywhere suitcases pain in the butt, can you put all you need in the pack that is the question
if your going for six weeks between two people I would go with suitcases, you can pack more.
If you plan on taking your belonging with you at all times during the trip then good luck stuffing everything into a backpacks.
a few suitcases and maybe one backpack for smaller things and things that need to be accessed easily.
rolling duffel bag, trust me you do not want to be carrying that kinda weight around the, let's say rolling hills of Florence, or whatever.
it's not like you can check it into a locker like at a themepark. whatever you pack, you carry up all types of terrain, so be prepared.
i say suitcase..
but which even u guys feel comfortable in..
but i think suitcase r better
The only reason I would use a backpack would be if you're constantly moving from one place to another and you need all your belongings with you in transit. This is why kids who travel Europe use backpacks. On a long tour like you're doing, if you have ground transportation and air, then a rolling suitcase will be much easier on your back, If you were going to Africa or Australia in the wild lands where there is no pavement, then definitely a pack.
backpacks without a doubt…i spent a few months traveling Europe and even tho its more convenient to use a suitcase, they can be a royal pain in the butt to carry around, especially the silly journeys like the bus stop to the hotel e.t.c
Edit: try to get the decent kind that have detachable sections, for when you dont need to take everything with you.
Pack anything you won't immediatley need in your suitcase. This will make it less likely to be damaged during flight (I.E. Clothes, maps.. etc.) Pack anything you might need on the plane in the Backpack. (I.E. Laptop, (If you have one) camera). In other words, I'm suggesting both.
If you'll be doing much walking with your luggage, particularly walking down cobblestone streets, or riding public transit, you'll want a backpack. I've traveled with both backpack and suitcase, and wouldn't do a multi-destination, independent trip with suitcase. However, if you are going to be taking taxis to various modes of transport and not doing a lot of hauling it around, the suitcase is fine and will probably hold more stuff and not squish it as much.
Hello,
Like you I am a backpack person, carry on carry off and no way anyone can steal anything. I figure if I need anything I buy it while out.
Have a great time!! :0)
I say luggage. Big steamer trunks.
If you have the bread to go on an around the world trip, you can spend the fifty cents to hire sherpas to carry it for you.
Actually it depends on what you're bringing and how you like to carry it, I personally like using a backpack because my hands are free, but that's just me. Maybe your husband could use a suitcase and you use a backpack?
Well from my point of view, a suitcase. If you guys are willing to spend a couple dollars then this should work. You might have heard of a rolling backpack. Well you can use a handle to pull your items along, as if it were a suitcase, but you could also pull at the straps and carry it on your back, like a backpack. So with that idea you and your husband might be happy with the plan. I hope it works! Good luck! Have a good and safe trip!
It depends on how much walking you will do when you are on your world trip. Backpacks are great if you want to go camping and do alot of sight seeing. Suitcases can be a real problem carrying everywhere.
It depends on the plan, of course. If it's more like adventure- walking-in-the-streets-all-day tourism, and you guys are a short/sneakers type, and like to carry a lot of stuff around while wandering around the city, go for the backpack. If you want to merge with the population of the cities you're visiting, and hate (like me) carrying things all the time, go for a rolling suitcase and a small bag where you can put your camera and things. I take my rolling suitcases up and down the subways and bus stations with little problem, and there are sizes approved to take with you in the airplane.
checking it so its loaded in the planes cargo hold i would say suitcase.. its more likely to survived the trip undamaged
and can be locked
carry on.. i would have to go with backpack..
its easy to carry can be molded easier to fit in tight racks
i have one of those airline bags you see pilots and crew use on wheels.. its big enough for just me for 5 days without laundry.and i have this check this
and i carry on a leather bag with my laptop and other oddball easy access items or valubles
Definitely Suitcase that is extremely durable. The airlines are terrible about throwing suitcases.
Depends on how often you are moving around – if you are moving every night and dont have a car then backpacks are easier to carry but then your stuff gets really screwed up – suitcases you can generally fit more in but they are a pain if you have no where to lelave them – if you have a hire car for a few days then suitcases can be left in them. try to get one of those holdalls that has wheels and backpack straps – then your somewhere in the middle?!
A good, lightweight suitcase with wheels. You will get really tired of lugging around a backpack.
Backpack….First, carefully and properly plan out your trips before leaving. This is the most crucial step. Study maps and other sources of information so that you are ready for any eventualities. Proper planning will let you develop and keep a healthy and positive attitude about the trip.
