Next summer Im going to South Germany, Vienna Austria, and Bratislava Slovakia. Im flying into Cologne which is somewhat close to the French Border, I want to backpack to Strasbourg with my cousin, I will be 18, he will be 13. Whats the best way to do this? Are there any good hostels along the way?

I'd like to find a backpack that can both go on an airplane as a carry-on and I could comfortably carry around for a weekend in Europe travelling. Suggestions? Frame isn't important, as long as it's well built.

I bought a Jansport Antics Bulldozer Backpack from Amazon. It has 4 side pockets, secured only by a small Velcro patch. I've already lost an expensive item from one of the pockets because the pocket opened. I want to sew on a more secure fastener. I'm thinking about a pants/skirt hook-and-eye for each pocket. I wonder, though, if it will be secure because there won't always be tension on the hook. Will it work? Do you have a better idea?
