Backpacking Essentials – 8 Things You Must Take Along For A Safe And Pleasant Backpacking Trip

Backpackers travel light. But unless you are a survival expert that can get along with just some basic tools and what he finds in nature, you should always carry certain backpacking essentials with you. Your needs of equipment depend on the kind of backpacking trip you plan and the area you travel, but certain things should always be part of your baggage.

Here are 8 must-have backpacking essentials:

Backpacking tent
Backpacking gear
Sleeping bag
Basic equipment
Food & water
Means of communication
First aid kit
Navigation system

Backpacking essentials #1: Backpacking tent
Some people sleep under the stars, but it's always better to have some form of tent or shelter. Your tent should be as light as possible, and must be suitable for the area you travel and all weather conditions you might face. Don't go without a rain fly if you might encounter rain, and make sure your tent is sturdy and can be secured additionally if you might see days of heavy winds.

Backpacking essentials #2: Outdoor gear
Your normal clothes certainly won't be suitable for backpacking. If you are serious about backpacking and won't to do it more than once, invest in some special outdoor gear. These clothes are lightweight, take up little space and dry quickly. Make sure you have an appropriate set of gear for the trip you plan (consider area and weather conditions).

Backpacking essentials #3: Sleeping bag and mat
These should be lightweight and space saving, too. But make certain they are suitable for the temperatures in which you travel. Rather take a bigger and heavier sleeping bag than freeze to death when backpacking in winter.

Backpacking essentials #4: Basic equipment
There are no restaurants and take-aways out there. You will need to make your own food. Get some basic equipment like a set of cutlery and cookware and a little stove. Outdoor stores carry special items that meet backpacker's needs. You should also take some basic means along to defend yourself, like a knife or pepper spray.

Backpacking essentials #5: Food & water
If you don't want to live on the food and water resources of the area you travel, or if you won't find enough there, make sure you carry enough food and especially water with you. Keep your meals simple so that your food won't weigh much.

Backpacking essentials #6: Navigation system
You don't want to get lost. Make sure you got a means to find your way, like a map, compass or GPS. Be sure to test your navigation system upfront to know that it works and how it works. Also make sure it will work in the area you travel to.

Backpacking essentials #7: Means of communication
This is crucial and can save your life, especially when travelling alone. So much can happen. Let's say you fall and break your leg, or you fall ill. Make sure you have a cell phone or other means of communication that works where you travel (a cell phone won't help if there's no reception), so that you can call for help if you need it.

Backpacking essentials #8: First aid kit
Get a travel first aid kit at your outdoor store. Since you often get dirty, plasters are a must to take care of small wounds and prevent infection. You should also have some basic medicines to deal with issues like fever, pain or diarrhoea. And if something big happens, like fractures or injuries of major vessels, a first aid kit can save your life until help arrives.

The golden rule for backpacking essentials is: Don't take more than you need, but don't take less than you need either. All backpacking equipment should be light, take up little space, and be suitable for your specific trip.

Small Fixed-Blade Knives for Camping, Hiking, and Backpacking

Small belt knives in the less than 4" range are a very useful and handy piece of equipment. For many campers and backpackers, this is the only fixed blade knife carried in order to hold down weight. If another tool, whether a larger fixed blade, axe, hatchet, tomahawk, machete, is carried for chopping or splitting, then a small fixed blade is all that is needed in the outdoors.

Getting the Most From Hiking With the Right Gear

Hiking and camping can provide some {of the} greatest fun you may possibly have in the great outdoors. The quality of your apparatus goes a long way to making either a fabulous {experience} that you'll desire to repeat or a nightmare that you'd rather banish from your mind.

Ways to pick out the right backpacking and hiking hardware include the following. A hiking and hiking journey might be a great test of the resourcefulness. Purchasing the hardware used for walking and camping out can turn out to become the initial challenge! Selling price low-cost backpacking or hiking apparatus usually appears tasty at first impression, nonetheless it seldom proves a sound long-term purchase.

There are exceptions {naturally} to this rule? You possibly can occasionally make huge savings when purchasing last year's design, regardless of whether or not it is really a tent, a backpack or a pair of hiking boots (the Vasque breeze hiking boot is a popular boot). Fashions change and the hardware makers regularly update their lines. If you are able to locate a genuine sale of quality brand items then you definitely may very well be prepared to make significant savings. Stick with identified manufacturers that supply a warranty with their item.

Top quality manufacturers will not generally disappoint. You don't want to locate oneself about the trail with defective hiking gear! Do invest {in a} great pair of hiking boots. A Hi Tec hiking boot can often provide good value for money. You will find a number of higher spec brands to pick and choose but the call is much more dependant upon the type of terrain you're most likely heading {to be} walking in, as well as the {weight} {of the} boot. Water-proof hiking boots, such as in this Keen Targhee ii mid review, will {cost} you extra but they're almost constantly well worth the extra cost. You cannot assure the weather when you're out walking and wet boots will lead to blisters and great pain. There are many credible online shops of walking boots. A note of caution before purchasing hiking boots online is {that you} may want to have tried on the first boots in a shop.

Not comfortable boots might lead to unhappiness in your hiking trip and have the ability for resulting in hazard should you can not retain your footing because of difficulty. When obtaining hiking boots look for robust uppers made of leather or even a combo of leather and nylon, breathable liners, braced rubber heels, well designed toes and solid arch service.

Soles will at times be rubber or even a mix of rubber and polyurethane. Do not forget about excellent hiking socks ideally wool.

When selecting your tent, contemplate the seasons in which you desire to hike and go camping out. A walker who enjoys backpacking late to the decline may well require a four-season tent or even a convertible tent. The drawback to the four-season tent will be the added {weight}; they're frequently ten to twenty percent heavier than a {three} {season} style. A convertible tent will permit you to adjust the ventilation and to add and eliminate poles as needed. Three-season tents are produced for use from spring through to {fall} in temperate climates. Though they are not likely to crash below a centimeter or {two} of snow, a heavier snow {fall} may lead to issues.
